Ready for Some Great News?
I have been dating a terrific gal named Laurel Harmon. We met last year while both of us were living in Arizona. We knew each other but didn’t talk much during that time (she was busy dating a variety of guys, and I was in a relationship at the time). Early last year, we both decided to move to Utah and ended up moving our stuff in the same truck (along with a few others).
Eventually we got to know each other better and began dating. I live in Salt Lake City and she in Provo (a 40-minute drive). But somehow we have managed to see each other almost every day in the months we have been dating more seriously. I have enjoyed getting to know her better and have appreciated the wonderful qualities she has as well as the common goals and ideals we share.
Well, the big news is that Monday night she accepted my proposal of marriage! Somehow I tricked her into it.
We had been discussing it for some time, and thankfully she has been patient with me. We’re planning to get married soon–August 11 in the Salt Lake City Temple. We are both 30 years old, so we are anxious to move forward with life together.
(We’d love to send an announcement to anyone who is interested. Please send me your mailing address.)
A little background on Laurel:
- She was born in Utah and grew up in Green River, Wyoming.
- In high school she ran cross-country and track, sang in choirs, played the flute (and piccolo!), performed in musicals, etc.
- She attended college for two years in Wyoming and then lived in Logan, UT for a year.
- She served an LDS mission in Brasilia, Brasil and in Denver, Colorado (after getting sick).
- She completed a degree in Music at Brigham Young University and then moved to Oakland, CA to get a master’s degree in a specialized form of Music Education from Holy Names University.
- She taught music at an elementary school in Tempe, AZ for a year and recently finished a year teaching in Provo, UT.
- Her exciting adventure this year has been to sing in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as a First Soprano. It has been a thrill to see her joy in this opportunity to share her talents.
- She comes from an amazing family. Her two parents have raised a family of 15 children–Laurel is the 9th. They have embraced me with open arms.
- She helps me be a better person. One quality in particular that impresses me about Laurel is her ability to find joy in the success of others.
As many of you know…choosing to marry has been an intimidating step for me. It requires a leap of faith and deep trust in the other person and in God. As members of the LDS faith, we believe this commitment will last for eternity. Laurel has many impressive accomplishments and qualities. But what have helped us reach this point more than anything have been Laurel’s good heart, reassuring feelings of comfort through prayer, the joys and love we have had while dating, the potential we feel we can reach as a couple, support from parents, and let’s be honest…her stunning good looks.

Steve and Laurel – I am so happy for you! All that awkwardness when you introduce each other is now gone because you can finally say “WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!” I remember the time just before I was engaged how hard it was to know what to say. At Stake Conference, we met a general authority named Elder Zwick and as my dad introduced our family, he kind of paused and said… “this is, uh, Scott’s friend Jenifer…” Elder Zwick was a wise man and later told my dad that if we ever became “more than friends” he would do our sealing. Now it’s been FIVE and a half years of bliss! I wish you the same!
Congrats!

Amazing, I knew there was a reason all was so quiet on the Piccolo front. Laurel, I’ll vouch for this quy. I have watched him spring from a budding young boy of eight years to a manly man of 30. Sometimes close, sometimes from afar. He’s the genuine article. Congratulations to the both of you.
