My Take on the Phoenix Suns Controversy
If the NBA is going to follow the letter of the law (as they did by suspending Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw for leaving the bench after Robert Horry’s cheap shot), they should also suspend Tim Duncan and Bruce Bowen for leaving the bench in an earlier dispute.
Stu Jackson (the NBA’s lead official) said it wasn’t the same thing because the other players (Francisco Elson and James Jones) weren’t in an “altercation.” If not, then why did Tim Duncan leave the bench? Clearly he left the bench to defend his teammate and then held himself back. Isn’t that exactly what Amare did? Duncan certainly wasn’t going out on the court to stretch his legs.
What is telling about this whole scenario is that David Stern, NBA Commissioner, cancelled his trip to attend the next game in Phoenix. If he felt his decision was right, he should take accountability for it and not hide from fans.

Amen, brother. It’s disappointing. What was a really exciting series would have only been better with both teams at full strength. At least the Suns would have had a good shot at the series, and, eventually, the title.
