I think that makes sense. It would fit the needs of a family who wanted a Web site for communication among themselves and with others. I still think there may be value in each family having a blog where they can post information they want to share with anybody, without getting bogged down in the whole family's information. Though maybe Google Groups will provide this kind of functionality at some point, too.

What about using a group on Google Groups? It folds in a lot of the things you mention, but also gives you web pages and real discussion/conversation ability. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if they integrate calendaring and their new JotSpot (wiki) technology as well.

Just think you can be planning a family reunion, mark it on the calendar, read the back and forth discussion, create an announcement page, all on one site.

Just my $.02
