Blogging as a Family

Let’s say you want to keep in better touch with your immediate and/or extended family. The Internet can help with that. One option is to send mass emails when you have something new to say. Or you could create a family Web site. These options are fine for many families, but I always feel bad sending mass emails, and it can be a lot of effort to create a Web site.

I propose that a great alternative is for each family member to create a blog. Then everybody would subscribe to everyone else’s blogs and be aware when someone has news or pictures to share. And you can obviously share your blog with people outside the family.

You wouldn’t want to put real personal information on your blog…it’s a way to share general announcements, pictures, thoughts, etc. If people want to know what’s up with you, they can watch your blog. If they don’t, they can’t blame you for not keeping in touch. :)

What about using a group on Google Groups? It folds in a lot of the things you mention, but also gives you web pages and real discussion/conversation ability. Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised if they integrate calendaring and their new JotSpot (wiki) technology as well.

Just think you can be planning a family reunion, mark it on the calendar, read the back and forth discussion, create an announcement page, all on one site.

I think that makes sense. It would fit the needs of a family who wanted a Web site for communication among themselves and with others. I still think there may be value in each family having a blog where they can post information they want to share with anybody, without getting bogged down in the whole family’s information. Though maybe Google Groups will provide this kind of functionality at some point, too.
